Unifying a fragmented investment experience inside a super-app used by 40M+ people

00

PROBLEM

Inter is a super-app with 40+ million users. Its investment vertical grew fast — each new asset class (global equities, crypto, fixed income) shipped as a silo. Users couldn't see their full picture across products. I led the design with one junior designer, working closely with engineering and product.

OUTCOMES

SUS 86.4 ↑12.3 pts +6% activation −9% support tickets

Business wanted parity with Wise. But Wise is a single-purpose app. Inter is a super-app where investments live next to twenty other features.

Copying Wise would have produced a screen that felt great in isolation and broken in context.

The first design move wasn't a screen. It was reframing the goal — from "look like Wise" to "build the right investment surface for a super-app."

The decision

Stop redesigning screens. Redesign the architecture.

Users don't think about money in silos. They think in totals, allocations, performance. The architecture had to reflect that.

Three moves

  1. Unified portfolio: Total value, allocation, performance — one surface, one view.

  2. Layered markets: Brazil, Global, Crypto as progressive layers, not forced tabs. Adding new asset classes later required no architectural rework.

  3. Dual modes: Research surfaced two mental models. The system serves both within one architecture:

    Diversified — for multi-portfolio managers

    Simplified — for single-portfolio users

Validation

SUS jumped from 74.1 → 86.4. Top 10% of digital financial products industry-wide.

Impact

+6% activation — users with only BRL assets began activating Global and Crypto

9% support tickets — questions about portfolio visibility stopped arriving

SUS 86.4 — Excellent range, grade A

Reflection

The most important decision wasn't a UI choice. It was the structural decision to stop treating each asset class as a separate product.

That's the kind of decision a screen redesign can't reach.
